Bob Hoot’s career began in publishing back in the eighth grade
when he started a creative write annual as an independent project
in journalism class. Later at the University of Michigan, Hoot worked
at Street Fiction Press and started Lightworks, an art magazine.
After graduation, his first job was at a weekly newspaper.
The allure of advertising and design guided Hoot’s career for the
next 15 years. In 1993, Hoot returned to publishing as graphics
editor at the Wisconsin State Journal. In addition to guiding the
editorial graphics and design of the daily paper, Hoot was asked
to design and produce special projects including books and commemorative
magazines about Monona Terrace, Badgers Rose and Packers Super Bowl.
Hoot also was asked to design and produce visitors guides — for
Madison and then for other markets where Lee Enterprises managed
the projects.
In 1997, Hoot left the Wisconsin State Journal to again pursue Hoot
Communications on a full time basis. Publishing and publishing services
are the primary focus of Hoot Communications and Hoot Publishing.
Hoot Communications provides publishing services to convention and
visitors bureaus for visitors guides in a variety of ways. Hoot
can offer design and production services for editorial pages, page
assembly, production/printing coordination and/or advertising design
and production including securing ad approvals. Hoot can also offer
a complete turnkey package including advertising sales, guide production,
project management and print purchasing. Hoot Communications often
partners with an experienced publishing sales company like Lee Enterprises
on turnkey projects.
Hoot Communications also offers turnkey editorial projects for newspapers.
Two titles now publishing are At Home and Healthy Living. Four markets
are currently publishing At Home, a glossy shelter and home lifestyle
magazine.
The local enterprise sells and often assembles the advertising and
provides one local home showcase story with photos. Hoot Communications
works with the local publisher to develop an editorial calendar
and provides the bulk of content. Nearly all of the content is localized
by Hoot Communications. Hoot also provides the design and production
of the magazine. The local publisher may purchase printing directly
to save costly mark-up fees. Hoot Communications provides competitive
printing bids and print coordination as part of the package. This
has been a successful formula for two titles on five markets and
is growing.

guides, magazine and book projects.
